Tourism Diversification and Localisation Unit and Excom Members of Tourism Ministry are holding meetings for local tourism development. According to the Tourism Ministry, these meetings involve discussions on local island tourism development and tourism diversification.

On 5th June 2021, the Tourism Diversification and Localisation unit and Excom Members of the ministry met with the H. Dh. Atoll Council, Kulhudhuffushi City Mayor, and the members of parliament from the constituencies in the atoll. The ministry also conducted meetings with the council and parliament members of Shaviyani Atoll on the same day.

In addition to meetings conducted with members from these atolls, the ministry also conducted a meeting with Noonu Atoll Council.

Tourism Minister of the Maldives, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom thanked the commitment of parliament members and council members for tourism localisation and diversification.

The Tourism Ministry of the Maldives also held the first meeting with the Tourism Golden Jubilee Steering Committee on 4th June 2021. According to the ministry, the first meeting involved discussions on the activity calendar of the celebrations for the ‘Maldives Golden Year 2022’.

As the island nation looks to further strengthen and diversify its tourism industry, the pandemic has tremendously affected local tourism businesses. However, with solid safety measures against the virus, the Maldives continues to welcome thousands of tourists every day.

By the end of May 2021, the Maldives has already welcomed over 450,000 tourists. According to the statistics from the Tourism Ministry, a total of 454,383 tourists visited the Maldives from 1st January 2021 to 31st January 2021.

Arrivals have however declined in May 2021 (compared to previous months of the year) as the island archipelago suspended entry from India; one of the major tourist source markets. Despite the many challenges, Maldives targets to welcome 1.5 million tourists in 2021.

Maldives Takes Home Wins at World Travel Awards 2024!

Maldives is yet again taking home coveted awards at the World Travel Awards (Indian Coean Category), at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2024. The award show which is being held at Dubai World Trade Center from 6th to 9th May recognises and rewards excellence in travel and tourism. It is no shock that the Maldives took home more than one award, as the destination has always been a tourist-hot spot.

The Maldives took home the following awards this year:

  • Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination 2024
  • Indian Ocean’s Leading Honeymoon Destination 2024
  • Indian Ocean’s Leading Green Destination 2024
  • Indian Ocean’s Leading Dive Destination 2024

The resorts that won these awards for the Maldives are also noteworthy. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island claimed the coveted title of ‘Indian Ocean’s Leading Hotel’. Vakkaru Maldives won ‘Indian Ocean’s Leading Resort’. Coco Bodu Hithi, Maldives was named ‘Indian Ocean’s Most Romantic Resort’. Cora Cora Maldives also enjoyed a strong showing, winning ‘Indian Ocean’s Leading All-Inclusive Resort’.

The Maldives also won some of these categories at the 2023 World Travel Awards. Last year the Maldives won the Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination 2023 title. Additionally, the country also won the Indian Ocean’s Leading Beach Destination 2023 and the Indian Ocean’s Leading Dive Destination 2023. Two of these titles have been won by the Maldives since 2020. This year, however, the Indian Ocean’s Leading Beach Destination was won by the beautiful Seychelles. In addition to the Maldives, Mauritius, Madagascar, and Reunion Island competed for this title.
