Velassaru Maldives Launches Interactive Coral Reef Restoration Program

Velassaru Maldives Coral Reef

Velassaru Maldives proudly introduces the Velassaru Coral Project, a new initiative that invites guests to take part in marine conservation. This project enables visitors to help restore coral reefs while promoting marine biodiversity, making it a unique and impactful experience during their stay. Through this immersive project, guests actively engage with the environment, fostering a deeper connection to the ocean.

A Hands-On Coral Experience for Guests

As part of the project, guests can purchase coral frames that the marine team decorates with carefully collected and secured coral fragments. Each frame includes a personalized plaque, giving guests the chance to leave a lasting legacy in the Maldives. Over the next two years, they will receive biannual updates, complete with photos and videos, tracking the growth and progress of their coral.

By taking part in this experience, guests learn the vital role coral reefs play in sustaining marine life. Despite covering only a small fraction of the ocean floor, coral reefs are home to 25% of all marine species. They provide shelter and sustenance for fish, invertebrates, and a wide range of sea creatures. Therefore, this initiative aims to raise awareness about why coral ecosystems need protection and restoration.

Explore the Artificial Reef: An Educational Dive Experience

Guests also have the opportunity to explore the artificial reef near the Immersion Dive Centre. Whether they are experienced divers or beginners, all guests can join guided dives led by professional instructors. These dives offer guests a deeper understanding of the coral regeneration process and the diverse marine life around the reef. As a result, guests are encouraged to contribute to the reef’s development, making this experience both educational and impactful.

A standout feature of the artificial reef is “The Dome,” a remarkable 4-meter by 6-meter structure submerged 10 meters below the water’s surface. The Dome, placed on 12 September 2024, provides an accessible dive site for guests to explore. During their dives, participants actively monitor the health of the coral, ensuring that the fragments remain securely fastened with zip ties and fishing lines. This hands-on involvement helps the reef grow and thrive.

Tracking Coral Health and Supporting Research

In addition to offering guests a unique experience, the Velassaru Coral Project contributes to important coral research. Each dive provides essential data on the health of the coral, such as its size, color, and species. Moreover, the team keeps a close eye on environmental factors like water temperature and quality. Even a slight temperature increase can cause coral bleaching, so tracking these changes is crucial for maintaining reef health.

The team also monitors common coral diseases, such as white syndrome, and looks for pests that might threaten the coral. Interestingly, sharks have been spotted near smaller reefs around the artificial site. As the coral and fish populations grow, the team hopes to see more sharks, as these predators help maintain a balanced ecosystem and contribute to the health and diversity of the surrounding reefs.

Sharing Data with the World: Supporting Global Coral Conservation

All data collected from the Velassaru Coral Project will be shared with Coral Watch, a global platform that tracks coral health and conservation efforts. By contributing this data, Velassaru guests not only help restore the reefs in the Maldives but also support worldwide coral research and conservation efforts. Through this collaboration, the project contributes to a global effort to preserve and protect coral ecosystems.

Working Toward a Healthier Future for the Oceans

Through active participation, Velassaru guests play a significant role in coral restoration and marine biodiversity. This hands-on experience gives them a deeper understanding of the ocean’s delicate ecosystems. By engaging in these efforts, Velassaru works toward a sustainable future for the oceans, ensuring that coral reefs remain vibrant and healthy for generations to come.
