Women in Wellness at Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru

In a world that continues to recognize the achievements and contributions of women in every field, the spotlight remains on inspiring figures who drive change and progress. For this year’s Women’s Day celebration, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru & Dhawa Ihuru shared an enlightening interview with Sirima, the Spa Manager, to highlight her journey and the empowerment of women in the wellness industry. With over 15 years in the spa industry, Sirima’s story stands as a true example of leadership, growth, and the power of mentorship. Through her conversation, we explore key reflections, offering valuable insights into leadership, personal growth, and the evolving role of women in the wellness sector.

A Passionate Journey in Wellness

Sirima’s journey into the wellness industry began with a deep curiosity about holistic wellness. “My journey began over 15 years ago when I trained in traditional Thai healing techniques,” she shares. “What started as a deep curiosity about holistic wellness soon became a lifelong passion.” Over the years, she worked her way up, gaining expertise not just in therapy, but also in leadership and operational skills. Joining Banyan Tree marked a pivotal moment in her career, providing her with an environment that values both personal and professional development and enabling her to thrive in a leadership role.

Empowerment at Banyan Tree

At Banyan Tree, the philosophy of “Empowering People” has profoundly influenced Sirima’s career. She emphasizes that empowerment is not just a concept but a practice. “At Banyan Tree, empowerment isn’t just a concept—it’s a practice,” she says. As a woman in leadership, Sirima has experienced firsthand how the company invests in its people. “Through training programs, mentorship, and leadership opportunities, I have been encouraged to enhance my skills and take on challenges.” This support has not only fueled her growth but also enabled her to give back. She now mentors younger therapists, helping them build confidence and expertise in their craft.

Women in Wellness: A Shifting Landscape

Looking at the evolving role of women in the wellness industry, Sirima sees positive changes. Women have always been at the heart of wellness, often as caretakers and healers. However, she notes that more women are now stepping into leadership roles, driving innovation, and influencing the future direction of the industry. “Women have always played a central role in wellness, often as caretakers and healers,” Sirima reflects. “However, we are now seeing more women stepping into leadership positions, driving innovation, and influencing the direction of the industry.” She believes this shift is transformative, bringing fresh perspectives and a more holistic approach to wellness. “It’s important that we continue to support and uplift one another, ensuring equal opportunities for career progression.”

Advice for Aspiring Women in Wellness

Sirima offers valuable advice to young women aspiring to work in the wellness industry: “Believe in your abilities, embrace continuous learning, and seek mentorship. The spa and wellness industry is about nurturing others, but it’s also about personal growth. Confidence comes with experience, so take every opportunity to refine your skills and step outside your comfort zone.”

The Meaning of Women’s Day

For Sirima, Women’s Day is a moment to celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of women. It’s also a reminder of the progress that has been made and the work still to be done in the pursuit of greater equality. “Women’s Day is a reminder to celebrate our strengths, resilience, and achievements. It’s also a moment to acknowledge the progress we’ve made while continuing to push for greater equality,” she says. At Banyan Tree, the company not only creates a sanctuary for guests but also cultivates an environment where women feel valued, respected, and inspired to grow.

Maldives Unveils New Dive Site with Submerged Dornier Aircraft

Maldives Dive Site: New Underwater Dornier Wreck for Divers

The Maldives recently unveiled an exciting new dive site near Kudagiri Picnic Island, featuring two submerged Dornier Do 228 aircraft. The Housing Development Corporation (HDC), in collaboration with the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), spearheaded the initiative to enhance the country’s marine tourism offerings while preserving its aviation heritage.

Air Maldives once used the Dornier Do 228, one of the first aircraft purchased by the airline. After years of service, the airline decommissioned the planes and repurposed them for this ambitious project. MTCC’s landing craft submerged the planes carefully in the lagoon, guiding them safely to the seabed with weights. The planes now serve as artificial reefs, fostering marine life and providing a unique attraction for divers.

The site, now known as the ‘Dornier Wreck,’ contributes to a broader effort to diversify tourism in the Maldives, offering an alternative to traditional attractions. It is expected to become a major draw for both tourists and locals, especially as Kudagiri Picnic Island, which has served as a recreational space for Greater Malé area residents since 2023, continues to attract visitors.

In addition to boosting tourism, the Dornier Wreck supports marine biodiversity. The submerged planes will gradually transform into vibrant underwater ecosystems, creating a unique dive experience while promoting sustainability and marine conservation.

The project highlights the Maldives’ ongoing commitment to innovative, eco-friendly tourism initiatives, blending history with nature to offer a one-of-a-kind attraction for diving enthusiasts.
