Maldives Records 13,516 Tourist Arrivals in First 2 Months of Border Reopening

Tourist arrivals to Maldives has increased by 61% during the second month since border reopening with 13,516 arrivals.

Maldives immigration has revealed a total of 13,516 tourists arrived in the Maldives during the first 2 months after the borders reopened. According to statistics by the Maldives immigration, tourist arrivals to Maldives has increased by 61% during the second month since border reopening.

A total of 8,339 tourists arrived in the Maldives from 16th August to 15th September. In the previous month, 5,177 arrivals were recorded from 15th July to 15th August. Furthermore, statistics from 1st September to 15th September 2020 reveal United Arab Emirates (UAE) as the leading source market with 656 arrivals. Meanwhile, Russia accounted for 539 tourist arrivals while arrivals from the United States stood at 502.

Among the top-performing source markets in terms of tourist arrivals during the period include; United Kingdom, Spain, and Brazil with 341, 254, and 262 arrivals respectively. Maldives tourist arrivals have been steadily rising since the country reopened its borders. However, the figures remain much weaker in comparison to pre-COVID arrivals.

A safe holiday experience

The Maldives sets itself apart with the unique concept of one island, one resort. Thus, social distancing and isolation come naturally for holidaymakers. Maldives made it mandatory for tourists to present a negative PCR test upon their arrival from 10th September 2020. Likewise, this decision is a move to further tackle the spread of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) granted Maldives the ‘Safe Travels Stamp’. The Safe Travel Stamp is the world’s first-ever global safety and hygiene stamp for Travel & Tourism. Furthermore, this stamp is designed to address COVID-19 and similar outbreaks.

The Maldives tourism ministry and the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has been taking up the effort to promote the Maldives in various destinations following the border reopening. Maldives tourism minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom revealed a goal to welcome an additional 100,000+ tourists before the end of 2020.
