Sun Siyam Iru Fushi recently hosted its annual Eco Week, a dedicated celebration focused on raising environmental awareness and promoting sustainability. Over the week, guests and team members came together to honor World Reef Awareness Day, World Environment Day, and World Ocean Day through engaging and educational activities.
Exploring and Protecting the Reef
The week began with a guided conservation snorkelling tour and a reef clean-up, both led by the resort’s resident Marine Biologist. During this time, guests experienced the vibrant house reef firsthand while actively contributing to its preservation.
Then, on World Environment Day, guests participated in a tree-planting session and enjoyed a peaceful nature walk along the island’s tropical trails, connecting closely with the natural surroundings.
Hands-On Coral Restoration and Night Snorkelling
When World Ocean Day arrived, guests took part in a coral planting activity at Waters Edge Beach. Here, they helped the resort nurture the fragile marine ecosystem through ongoing coral restoration efforts. Later in the evening, guests gathered for an open-air screening of a documentary about coral reefs, which deepened their understanding of marine life and the importance of conservation.
To wrap up the day, the resort hosted a magical night snorkelling adventure that revealed the reef’s nocturnal beauty and offered guests a rare glimpse of underwater life after dark.
A Commitment to Sustainability
Eco Week forms part of Sun Siyam Iru Fushi’s broader commitment to sustainability through the Sun Siyam Cares initiative. Because of this, the resort continues to offer meaningful experiences that encourage guests to appreciate and protect the environment.
The resort supports sustainability through several ongoing projects, including:
- Regular coral restoration by planting and conducting reef clean-ups
- Island-wide tree planting programs, having planted 126 trees this year
- Installation of 18 coral frames in the lagoon to support reef growth
- Reducing single-use plastics by switching to glass water bottles and setting up an in-house bottling plant
In addition, the resort engages with the local community by supporting nearby schools and organizing environmental awareness sessions, demonstrating its dedication to both nature and people.
