With approximately 3,515 arrivals daily, Maldives is nearing its goal of welcoming 1.5 million tourists this year. The numbers have been steadily increasing since the archipelago reopened its borders in July 2020, after the tourism industry was at a standstill for nearly four months.

India continues to hold the highest market share, with over 22 percent of tourists being from the neighbouring nation. Russia comes at a close second, with 17.3 percent. Other top markets include Germany, the USA, the UK and Saudi Arabia.

The Maldives’ one-island-one-resort concept offers natural isolation making the destination a safe haven amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, according to the tourism ministry, 95 percent of resort staff were fully vaccinated by 23rd November 2021.

Tourist arrivals this year have far exceeded 2020’s annual total. Now more than ever, it is evident that the Maldives will most likely achieve its target of welcoming 1.5 million tourists by the end of the year.
