The Maldives has recorded 101,818 tourist arrivals in July 2021. According to the statistics from the Ministry of Tourism, arrivals increased by 81.3% in the month compared to June 2021.
Statistics show that on average, tourists spent 9.1 days in the island nation during July 2021. Likewise, from 1st January 2021 to 1st August 2021, tourists spent an average of 9 days in the tropical holiday destination. During this period, the Maldives recorded 617,791 tourist arrivals.
From 27th March 2020 to 15th July 2020, the borders of Maldives were closed. Hence, the island archipelago only recorded 1,752 arrivals in July 2020. As opposed to pre-COVID figures (July 2019), tourist arrivals to the Maldives have decreased by 22.9% in July 2021.
In mid-July, tourist arrivals to the island archipelago exceeded the annual total of 2020. As the island nation resumed issuing visas to travellers from South Asian countries on 15th July 2021, visitors to the Maldives began to dramatically increase as well.
The “World’s Leading Destination of 2020” targets to welcome 1.5 million tourists in 2021. A report by the World Bank projects that the country’s GDP will grow by 17.1% this year due to tourism.
