The Maldives has been the talk of Twitter as a number of famous Indian celebrities spend their getaway in the island destination. Indian comedian Vir Das joked that there’s enough Indian actors and actresses in the Maldives right now if someone sends them a camera and a script they could come back with a movie.

The holiday destination is trending on twitters as users refer the Maldives to ‘the new Mumbai’. ‘The new Lokhandwala’ and Goa for rich people. However, the topic received criticism from various people referring to it as disrespectful.

Indian media outlets have reported that the Maldives is the new Mumbai as well. Which is a reference to the staggering numbers of Indian celebrities spending their getaway in the Maldives right now.

Over the past few weeks, various Indian celebrities from; actors, actresses, and TV personalities have spent their getaways in the Maldives. Sonakshi Sinha, Sophie Choudry, Samantha Akkineni, Shanvi Srivastava, Vedhika, Dheeraj Dhoopar, Masaba Gupta, Katrina Kaif, and Saina Nehwal have just recently spent their getaways in the island archipelago.

India is one of the closest neighbouring countries to the Maldives. The Indian tourist market has also seen a robust growth this month as well. And in 2019, Maldives saw a staggering number of tourist arrivals from India. Thus, ranking it as the 2nd position of the leading tourist markets. Likewise, as 19th November 2020, 5,449 tourists from India arrived, since the border reopening.

Additionally, India is also one of the key focus markets for the Maldives’ tourism industry to recover from the losses of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
