Tourist Arrivals to the Maldives from Russia Grew by Over 300% this Year

Tourist arrivals to the Maldives from Russia grew by over 300% in 2021, compared to 2020. According to statistics from the Maldives’ Ministry of Tourism, arrivals from Russia increased by a staggering 301.8% from 1st January 2021 to 16th June 2021, compared to the same period last year.

When compared to the pre-pandemic figures of 2019, arrivals from Russia to the Maldives grew by 184.2%.

Statistics from the Ministry of Tourism show that 116,310 tourists from Russia visited the Maldives between 1st January 2021 and 16th January 2021. This is 24.1% of the total market share. In the same period last year, 28,949 tourists visited the Maldives from Russia.

Russia is currently the Maldives leading tourist source market. Arrivals from Russia have tremendously contributed to the recovery of the Maldives’ tourism industry. Likewise, popular Russian personalities have visited the Maldives since the island archipelago reopened its borders last year.

According to the latest statistics, 489,182 tourists have visited the Maldives by 19th June 2021. Tourist arrivals to the Maldives increased by 27.8% compared to last year. However, it should be noted that the Maldives’ borders were closed for April, May, June and half of July last year.

Tourists spent an average of 9 days in the island nation between 1st January 2021 and 19th June 2021. The average stay of tourists has slightly increased compared to the earlier months of this year.

The government of the Maldives announced several initiatives to attract more visitors this year. Once all the residents of the island nation are fully vaccinated, Maldives plans to start a ‘visit, vaccinate, vacation’ initiative.

The Maldives has an ambitious goal to welcome 1.5 million tourists in 2021. The island archipelago is currently regarded as one of the safest holiday destinations in the world, thanks to its unique geographical advantage; the one-island-one-resort concept.
