Maldives Records 92,103 Tourist Arrivals in January 2021

The Maldives has recorded 92,103 tourist arrivals in January 2021. According to the Maldives’ Ministry of Tourism, the island nation witnessed a daily average of 2,971 tourist arrivals to the island nation.

The figures indicate that tourists spent an average of 9.2 days in the Maldives. In comparison to January 2020, tourist arrivals have decreased by 46.9%. In January 2020, Maldives recorded 173,347 tourist arrivals.

Looking at the leading markets regionally, Europe is the biggest tourist source market. Asia & Pacific ranked in the second place with 21,233 arrivals during the period. 3,840 tourist arrived from the Americas while 2,367 tourists arrived from the middle east. Lastly, 890 tourists arrived from Africa.

Country-wise, Russia ranks as Maldives’ leading tourist source market with 20,973 tourist arrivals in January 2021; which is 22.8% of the total market share. Neighbouring India came in at the second place with 19,135 arrivals, a market share of 20.8%.

7,210 tourists arrived in the Maldives from Ukraine. And the Ukraine source market witnessed a whopping growth of 196.2%. Likewise, in the 4th place, the Kazakhstan market also grew by 152.5% with 4,434 tourist arrivals.

Romania ranked as the 5th biggest tourist source market in January 2021. Several Romanian celebrities including Singer INNA and Romanian Model Adelina Pestritu have spent their vacation the Maldives during the month.

The Maldives recorded 3,728 tourist arrivals from France; a decrease of 46.4%. Followed by, 3,390, 2,504, and 1,960 tourists arrived from Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States respectively. Furthermore, Switzerland ranked in the 10th place with 1,958 tourist arrivals.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, 144 resort (and marinas) are currently open in the Maldives. Meanwhile, 11 hotels, 135 guesthouses, and 324 safari vessels remain active as of 31st January 2021. In this year 2021, Maldives targets to welcome 1.5 million tourists. Likewise, the tropical holiday destination concluded 2020 with 555,494 tourist arrivals.

Although we do not expect heroic stories to come out of a vacation at a Maldives resort, recent incidents have shown that anything can happen. Yes, even when you’re on vacation. The heroic stories of two couples, Mr. Jordan Daniel Van Dyk and Ms. Denielle De Bruyn have started circulating across the Maldives. The couple came to the Maldives for their honeymoon at the beautiful Dusit Thani Maldives. However, it appears that the honeymooners are leaving the Maldives with more than just honeymoon memories.

According to the Baa Atoll Police Station, on the 28th of April, the couple witnessed a staff member falling from a water villa deck into the ocean while on duty. If you’re ever stayed at a Maldives resort, you can understand the fear of falling from the deck into the ocean. Although the water below is beautiful, when caught off guard, the ocean can be a scary place. It appeared that the staff member was in a state of distress and was struggling in the water. In these situations, people do one of two things. Wait for someone else to take action as they stand by, or immediately jump in to avoid a sad situation.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Mr. Van Dyk and Ms. De Bruyn acted swiftly and courageously, coming to the aid of the drowning staff member. There is no doubt that this swift response by the couple was heroic, averting what could have been a tragic event at Dusit Thani Maldives.

Dusit Thani Maldives has acknowledged the bravery and swift action of the honeymooning couple, awarding them for their bravery in saving the staff member of the resort.
