Canareef Resort Maldives is excited to share the incredible achievements of its culinary team at the prestigious Food and Hospitality Asia Maldives Global Culinary Challenge 2024. This remarkable event, held at Dharubaaruge in Malé, showcased the talent of our chefs, who proudly brought home an impressive total of 17 medals across various categories. As a result, their success highlights their dedication to culinary excellence and creativity.

Speaking of this achievement, the General Manager of Canareef Resort, Jaish Ibrahim, said:

When the culinary team returned from the competition, they received a warm welcome at the jetty. Afterward, they celebrated at Meera Bar, enjoying refreshing drinks and a speech by the Assistant General Manager, Deepak Kannan. This event not only recognized their achievements but also highlighted the resort’s pride in their hard work and dedication.

The most prestigious culinary exhibition in the region, this competition is accredited by the World Association of Chefs Societies (WACS). It provides a unique platform for chefs from over 100 resorts, hotels, and restaurants to demonstrate their skills. Moreover, not only do they compete, but they also gain valuable feedback from a panel of internationally acclaimed judges. This interaction fosters growth and learning among culinary professionals.

This year’s competition highlighted culinary excellence and created a lively community of chefs. It allowed them to connect, share experiences, and appreciate the impressive displays of both Maldivian and international cuisine.

Meet the Mastermind: Dirk van Zyl

Leading these immersive wine events is Glenelly’s Cellar Master, Dirk van Zyl. Raised on a vineyard in South Africa’s Robertson Wine Valley and educated in Viticulture and Oenology at Stellenbosch University, Dirk brings deep expertise and passion to every tasting. He shares:

“Wine is unique, as it truly tells a story of time and place. It reflects both the vintage in which it was made and the site on which the vineyards are grown. As a winemaker, you try your best to capture this as truthfully as possible in the bottle and one of the greatest joys is to be able to share each wine’s story with people from around the world. The upcoming wine events create a wonderful opportunity to tell the story of Glenelly, through our wines, in the incredible beauty of the Maldives.”

In addition, Dirk will also conduct expert workshops and blind tastings for the resorts’ top culinary teams, helping them deepen their knowledge so they can guide guests, whether novices or aficionados, through the Glenelly experience with confidence.

Expanding a Shared Philosophy of Giving

This event is part of Atmosphere Core’s growing wine program, inspired by its Joy of Giving philosophy. Launched in 2021 with the luxury THE OZEN COLLECTION, the program has since expanded to other brands in the group. Furthermore, collaborations with Spanish winery Bodegas Martín Códax and Italy’s Bottega SpA followed alongside the ongoing Glenelly partnership.
