The over 30-year-old international airport in Hanimaadhoo has been undergoing major renovations under the Government’s initiative to improve infrastructure. The development project aims to establish a 2.7-kilometre runway, build a terminal with a capacity of 1.3 million passengers, and provide provisions for jet fuel storage.
By the middle of 2023, the development project had completed close to half of the construction work. And now, an additional milestone has been reached with the newly developed apron area being put into operation. As the airport bids farewell to its over 32-year-old apron, it welcomes a newly developed 38,000 sqmt apron space. With this new development, the apron area can simultaneously accommodate three large aircraft and five general crafts.
The Hanimaadhoo International Airport project is one of the biggest development projects being carried out by the Government in Nothern Maldives. As the project hits these milestones, travellers can look forward to easier access to the Maldives in the near future!
