As Kandooma Maldives marks its 40th anniversary, the island isn’t just celebrating its transformation into a world-class destination—it’s also honoring the people who have made this journey possible. Among these unsung heroes are two incredible individuals: Zakariyya Mahmood and Mohamed Hashim, better known as Modey. Their decades of hard work, passion, and dedication have not only shaped the island’s growth but have also become the heart and soul of Kandooma itself. From humble beginnings to iconic figures, their stories testify to the power of perseverance, growth, and community. Therefore, the legacy of these two individuals and the vibrant history of Kandooma Maldives are now celebrated.
Zakariyya Mahmood: A Lifetime of Dedication
Zakariyya Mahmood connected to Kandooma in July 1982, three years before the island officially opened to guests. Born in N. Kendhikulhudhoo, the island’s owners invited him to join the team as a laborer because they knew him personally. From the very start, Zakariyya played a significant role in the island’s early development and later took on multiple roles in the Engineering department. Over the decades, he became a mentor to younger employees, watching both them and the island grow, particularly after its rebranding under IHG. Today, Zakariyya serves as Crew Leader for Plant Maintenance.
Reflecting on his 43 years at Kandooma, Zakariyya said, “Kandooma is more than just a workplace; it is my home. I have seen it evolve from a simple island into the stunning destination it is today. My greatest joy has been sharing my knowledge with new generations and watching them grow. “
Mohamed Hashim: A Story of Growth and Leadership
At just 17 years old, Mohamed Hashim left his home in HA. Molhadhoo in 1986, seeking new opportunities. A job ad in Malé led him to Kandooma, where he started his career as a gardener. Over the years, Modey took on a variety of roles across different departments, including F&B service, Speedboat Crew, Bar Attendant, Laundry Supervisor, and eventually Housekeeping Manager in 2008.
Modey’s hard work and leadership didn’t go unnoticed. As a result, he won the title of ‘Manager of the Year’ in 2013 and again in 2017. Reflecting on his career, Modey shared, “Kandooma has given me endless opportunities to grow. My advice to new team members is simple: be passionate, be open to learning, and embrace challenges as opportunities. This island has shaped my life, and I am forever grateful.“
Celebrating a Legacy of Passion and People
During the Grand Gala Dinner on 19 March 2025, Zakariyya, Modey, and five other long-serving team members, all of whom have worked at Kandooma for over 20 years, will be recognized for their contributions to the island’s success.
Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives’ General Manager, Mark Eletr, expressed his appreciation for the dedicated team: “Beyond Zakariyya and Modey, Kandooma is home to many team members who have dedicated years, even decades, to making this island a welcoming escape for travellers worldwide. Their stories, commitment, and warm hospitality define Kandooma”
He added, “Our people are the foundation of Kandooma, and we are incredibly proud to honour them as part of this milestone celebration. Their unwavering dedication, resilience, and passion reflect the true spirit of Kandooma. They have helped shape the guest experience and mentored and inspired generations of team members.”
