Having ceased the operations in the tourism sector for months, Maldives has been preparing to reopen its borders and welcome travellers in July 2020. Tourism being the country’s largest revenue generator, the halt of travel activities greatly affected the economy of Maldives. Despite the impact of the crisis on hotels and resorts as well as the employees working in the hospitality sector, many luxury groups such as Lily hotels introduced enhanced flexibility in bookings and cancellations. Preparing to reopen borders in July, the Ministry of Tourism currently working on the new tourism guidelines which is to come into effect with the opening of the border. Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation (MMPRC) has also been working to keep the country on travel radar. This includes reforming of existing marketing strategies focusing on the health and safety of the travellers, promotional campaigns, and hosting several webinars to inform and engage with potential markets. Luxury resorts have also been preparing to welcome guests by taking plenty of precautionary measures and safety protocols to ensure safe holidays.
