According to the Ministry of Tourism, Russia, United Kingdom, and United Arab Emirates are the top 3 leading tourist markets to the Maldives.

The Maldives has recorded 44,365 tourist arrivals since the border reopening, as of 4th November 2020. So, which are the leading tourist source markets right now? According to the Ministry of Tourism, Russia retained its position as the leading tourist market to the Maldives. However, the United Kingdom has taken the spot as the 2nd leading tourist source market with a share of 8.6%.

Among the top 10 tourist markets, Russia retained its position as the leading tourist market to the Maldives since the border reopening with 9,519 tourist arrivals and a share of 21.5%. Secondly, 3,817 tourists arrived in the Maldives from the United Kingdom, as of 4th November 2020. Statistics from the Ministry of Tourism positioned the United Arab Emirates as the third-biggest tourist market to the island nation with 3,683 arrivals.

3,484 tourists arrived in the Maldives from the United States, which holds a share of 7.9% of the total arrivals. In addition to that, neighbouring India came in at 5th Place bringing 2,345 tourists. India is one of the key focus markets in the recovery of the Maldives’ tourism industry.

Followed by India, Germany ranked at the 6th place with 2,099 tourist arrivals. And that’s with a share of 4.7%. 1,773, 1,738, and 1,716 tourists arrived in the Maldives from France, Ukraine, and Spain Respectively. Lastly, Brazil came in at 10th place among the leading tourist markets with 1,288 tourist arrivals to the Maldives.

The island nation also recorded the highest number of tourist arrivals per day this month. On 1st November 2020, 1,590 tourists arrived in the Maldives. The same day, Velana International Airport has also witnessed a record number of flight movements since the border reopening. Likewise, from 1st November 2020 to 4th November 2020, 3,983 tourists have arrived in the holiday destination.

In October 2020, the Maldives recorded 21,515 tourist arrivals. The island archipelago opened its borders to all international travellers with no restrictions on 15th July 2020. Before the Maldives closed its borders, 382,760 tourists arrived in the destination. And despite the global circumstances, tourist arrivals to the Maldives are growing at a steady pace.
